Did You Know?

The biggest leaps towards a healthier world can start with small deeds at home. Teach your kids about recycling, adopt more natural or water-preserving gardening habits.

Materials:

  • Wire hanger
  • Panty hose
  • Plastic basin/tub (Large enough to totally immerse frame)
  • Blender/Food Processor (For making paper pulp)
  • Water
  • Scrap Paper –The kind of paper you use will change the way your new paper will look! Experiment with lots of different kinds!

Directions:

  1. Bend a wire coat hanger into a rectangular or square shape. Stretch pantyhose tightly across the wire. This is your paper-making frame!
  2. Tear the paper you are recycling into small bits and place in a blender. Fill the blender with hot water, and shred until there are no flakes of paper left (you may want to experiment with the amount of water) and the consistency is that of a thick soup. This is your pulp!
  3. Find a large basin or tub that is large enough for the frame to fit in. Fill the basin about halfway up with water, and add 2-3 recipes of pulp.
  4. Slide the frame in along the bottom of the basin, and while it rests on the bottom, stir up the pulpy mixture.
  5. When it is evenly stirred, slowly raise the frame above the water. Let most of the water drain off, and then put it aside until it has completely dried.
  6. Repeat the above steps with as many frames as you’d like!
  7. When the pulp has dried, you may gently peel off your new paper from the frame.
  8. At this point, your paper is ready to use! If you’d like, you can use an iron to try and press out your paper. (Optional).

Try this!

Experiment using different materials to make your paper. What happens if you add colored paper? Orange peels? Leaves? What else can you think of to try?
