Bugs and Brews: Insect Derby
May 1, 2026 | 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Put on your best Derby hat and join us for a race like no other at Butterfly Pavilion’s Bugs & Brews: Insect Derby! This 21+ event blends the excitement of Derby Day with the incredible speed, strength, and survival skills of invertebrates, celebrating the tiny competitors that truly know how to race, hustle, and win.

Your Ticket Includes:
  • Two Drinks – Choose from beer, wine, or non-alcoholic options as you explore our exhibits.
  • Exhibit Exploration – Enjoy two hours of adults-only access to our exhibits, with no kids and lots of fun.
  • Derby Hat Contest – Come wearing your best Derby hat with a creative invertebrate twist! Whether inspired by butterflies, beetles, (faux) flowers, or garden critters, show off your style and celebrate the incredible world of invertebrates. Submit a photo for a chance to win fun prizes and Derby-themed bragging rights.
  • Dung Beetle Derby Activity! – Get ready to join a dung beetle team and answer exhibit-based questions! Each completed card moves their team closer to the finish line. The first team to reach the goal wins!
  • Animal Experiences:
    • Cockroach Racing – Watch our cockroaches race toward the finish line on a unique track made just for them!
    • Leafcutter Ant Feeding – Learn how we care for and feed our leafcutter ants, and discover the unique ways they use the leaves and plant material they collect.
    • Up-Close Animal Encounters – Surround yourself with free-flying butterflies in our conservatory, gently touch a sea star in our Water’s Edge exhibit, and peer into invertebrate enclosures to witness tarantulas, beetles, stick insects, and more.
  • Educational Booth – Learn more about the secret lives of invertebrates and their survival of the fittest mentality.

  • Metamorphaces LLC – Have the opportunity to enjoy themed face painting, airbrush tattoos and much more!
