Keynote Speaker: Rudi Putra

Rudi Putra is a Senior Advisor of the Leuser Conservation Forum (FKL), a local NGO that manages more than 400 field staff to protect and restore the Leuser Ecosystem, a 2.6 million-hectare remaining forest in Northern Sumatra, Aceh, Indonesia. Rudi and his team are dismantling illegal palm oil plantations that are causing massive deforestation in the Leuser region and protecting the habitat of the Sumatran rhino, a species with only 80 individuals left in the world. Through this work, Rudi received the Future for Award in 2013 for his efforts to protect the Sumatran rhino, and in 2014, he received the Goldman Environmental Prize for his efforts to combat illegal logging, forest encroachment for palm oil production, and policies that open endangered ecosystems to mining and plantation industries. In 2019, Rudi was also selected as a National Geographic fellow and has dedicated 24 years to conserving the Leuser Ecosystem.

More About the Ketambe Butterfly Project in Sumatra

The Indonesian Island of Sumatra holds some of the richest and most diverse tropical forests on the planet, giving shelter to many rare species. This is the last place on Earth where the Sumatran rhino, elephant, tiger, and orangutan all coexist. About 12 million hectares of forest on Sumatra have been cleared in the past 22 years, a loss of nearly 50%. This highlights the urgent need for sustainable wildlife-based economies that create development opportunities for local communities and promote coexistence with the natural environment.

Butterfly Pavilion and the conservation organization Wildlife Protection Solutions worked with FKL, an Indonesian conservation organization, to build a butterfly farm in Sumatra. The butterfly farm creates a sustainable source of butterflies to be used as powerful ambassador animals in educational exhibits around the world, as well as offer critical funding to conduct conservation efforts on the ground.
