Toxic Terrors

Discover the fascinating world of toxic invertebrates. From venomous hunters to poisonous defenders, these animals have evolved in unique ways to protect themselves, catch prey, and survive. 

Look for our Toxic Terrors signs throughout the exhibit to learn which animals are venomous or poisonous, and how they effect people and animals.  

Pink Leg Millipedes – Dendrostreptus macracanthus 

• Millipedes are detritivores, meaning they feed on decaying leaves and organic matter as they help recycle nutrients back into the soil. If threatened, they can release a defensive chemical that discourages predators from eating them.  

Mexican Fire Red Tarantula – Brachypelma boehmei 

• The Mexican Fire Red Tarantula is known for its bright orange-red legs and dark body. When threatened, it can flick tiny, urticating hairs from its abdomen that can irritate the skin and discourage predators. 

Death Stalker Scorpion – Leiurus quinquestriatus  

• The Deathstalker Scorpion is a highly venomous species found across North Africa and the Middle East. Its venom contains a mix of neurotoxins that help it subdue prey and defend itself from predators.
